April 2007
Hello ABC!
Spring has finally come to the Northeast. Flowers are blooming, the leaves are out on the trees, the air is fresh, and we have a new baby to admire here at ABC. (Thanks to all who have sent their kind wishes!)
But---we're not the type to rest on our proverbial laurels, so here at ABC headquarters we're getting in high gear for BEA. We're looking forward to seeing many of you there, and it will be one of our most exciting BEA's ever.
Lots of exciting news to tell, so read on!

Dear ABC Members,
This month we welcome Rachel Hochberg to the ABC staff, where she is heroically taking on the monumental task of coordinating the dinner reservations for the ABC gala at the Copacabana. Good luck Rachel, we are eternally grateful to have your help this year.
ABC Treasurer, Dinah Paul, is stepping down for family reasons. She will be missed on the Board, but told me that she looks forward to serving again in the future. There is one year left in Dinah's term, and Dara LaPorte from Politics and Prose has graciously agreed to accept an appointment as Board Treasurer through BEA 2008. Welcome Dara!
Ballots for the upcoming Board election went out last week. If you need to download a copy click here. The Nomination Committee received lots of great feedback and nominations, and, balancing geography, store size and experience, they have assembled an excellent slate of candidates.
One last thing - BEA. I hope that you all are coming to take advantage of the tours, the seminars, the New Voices Luncheon, the silent auction and gala, the new program of author readings at the ABC booth on Friday, the chance to talk shop with fellow booksellers, and most especially the chance to hear a very new voice when Lola Faye Mofsky-McLean makes her first personal appearance at BEA. Congratulations Kristen and Russell.

| The Annual Meeting and New Voices Luncheon Update |
|
|
Thursday, May 31st
The Brooklyn Marriott (Hotel ABA)
This year's New Voices luncheon is shaping up to be fabulous, with two exciting authors speaking, and a gallery of New Voices projects to explore.
We had a great list of possible speakers this year, so we decided to split the slot in order to bring members two new up and comers to keep an eye on.
And let's not forget the Annual Meeting. It's short, sweet, and full of good news. Not the least of which is the fantastic slate of officers we have for the coming year. Come and learn what we've been up to.
Here's what it looks like:
- 11:45-12:15-ABC Annual Meeting
- 12:20-12:30: New Voices Speaker: Melissa Marr, author of Wicked Lovely (HarperCollins)
- 12:35-12:45: New Voices Speaker: Pseudonymous Bosch, author of The Name of this Book is Secret (Little, Brown & Co)
- 12:45-1:15: Participants browse New Voices gallery
Although Melissa Marr was voted "most likely to end up in jail" in high school, she decided to get an M.A. and teach Lit and Gender Studies to college students across the country. Along the way, she reports that she has been unable to resist trying new things-including working an archeological dig, slinging drinks at a biker bar, and getting fabulous tattoos. She calls all of this "research" for her writing. To fill her craving for new experiences, she has lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Southern California, and she plans to keep roaming with her family as widely and as often as possible. This year, she thinks, she is living in Virginia. Please visit her on the web at www.melissa-marr.com and help feed her addiction to meeting interesting people.
Mysterious stranger? Anonymous Author? Who is Pseudonymous Bosch and how does he know so much? The truth will all be revealed-in time.

| 2007 Auction Preview from Anne Irish |
|
| Holy Cow!
The Secret Garden Silent Auction is shaping up to be another blockbuster. Pieces are still arriving every day and I continue to be amazed as I open every package. It is like a special holiday every time. The whole event says volumes about how strongly book creators feel about supporting the independent booksellers. I am taking pictures of the artwork which are posted at my page at Walgreens.com. Please go there to get a sneak preview of auction night. There will be more coming soon.
I am still in need of volunteers to help out at the auction. I will need people to be at the Copacabana by 4 on Friday, June 1 to help set up and get instructions. The volunteers are also asked to help after the dinner with packing up the artwork and clean up. Please shoot me an e-mail and let me know if you can help out . There will be substitutes if you are going to need to do some bidding of your own.
Anne Irish
ABC Auction Director
A note from Kristen:
You can see all of the artwork at Anne's page above, but just to give you a taste, here are a few of my favorites so far:
